What is Prayer?
First Let’s review what prayer is NOT:
1. It is not a magic lamp where I can ask God for anything and He grants my wishes.
2. It is not a jumble of words that I don’t understand or a sentence or mantra that I repeat over and over
3. It is not only for crisis situations when we don’t have any more options or choices
4. It is not only for the super righteous or “religious” leaders

Now, let’s see what prayer is. It can’t be summed up in a nice short list. It is very complex, yet the youngest child can do it. It should be the first thing we do when we wake up, and the very last thing we do before we sleep. It happens at certain times and situations throughout the day, yet it is a state of being that we live all day long. Have I confused you yet? Let us start at the beginning.
Before Jesus came to earth, God had set up a temple in Israel. He told them not only how they were supposed to worship, but when, and even how to build the temple. The temple had a large outdoor courtyard where any clean, Israelite could go. Here they would learn about God, celebrate feasts and holidays, and where they would kill and sacrifice animals for all the bad things they had done.
Now, there was a special building in the courtyard. It was a holy place. It was divided into two sections. The front was for the priests who would worship God by burning incense, lighting candles, asking for forgiveness, and thanking God for blessings. In the back was a very special place called the Holy of Holies. Here, the high priest would come once a year and offer incense and ask God’s forgiveness for the whole nation of Israel. It was so holy that only the High priest would be allowed to come. He had to do a whole list of rituals to make sure he was clean and worthy to enter. If not, God might strike him dead right there and then. You may think that was pretty harsh, but it wasn’t the case. More like God is so clean and pure, and we are so dirty and sinful. It is like oil and vinegar. The two cannot be in the same space. To make sure no one accidentally went into the Holy of Holies, a large veil or curtain separated the two spaces.
So, why am I telling you about all this history, and how does this temple have to do with prayer? Well you see, over 900 years later, a man name Jesus came. He taught about many things including prayer and gave a wonderful example on how to pray. We will talk about this later. Then, at the age of 33, He was arrested, and killed on a cross. While He was on the cross a few amazing things took place. One, incredibly sad but awesome thing was Jesus took on all the sin of the whole world. God actually turned His back on Jesus and poured out all the punishment for every sin every committed, from the beginning of time on, Jesus. Jesus paid for my sin and your sin. Then He died. At that very moment, another miraculous event happened. Remember that veil we talked about that separated the holy place from the holy of holies? It was torn! Not from the bottom up like a person would tear it. It was torn from the top down. Because of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice, we, you and me, have direct access to God. It doesn’t mean that God is no longer holy. It doesn’t mean that we are perfect. What it does mean is that we can have forgiveness of sins. If we trust in Jesus and believe Him, what He did on that cross. We can give all of our bad thoughts, words, and actions to Jesus and He will pay for all of them. Now, when God looks at us, He doesn’t see a dirty, messed up Jessie. He sees JESUS. And because Jesus is perfect, we can go right to God’s throne through prayer, and talk with God. How amazing is that! Prayer is a gift!

How to Pray:
As I mentioned before, Jesus gave us an example of how to pray. You may hear it as the Lord’s prayer. You can find it in the Bible in Matthew 6: 9-13
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.”
We should start by praising God for who He is and what He has done.
We should want Jesus to come back and have God’s plan to come about. We pray in the Spirit for His will.
We should ask for our needs
We should ask for forgiveness for the bad things we do. We should forgive others
We should ask God to help us to be holy and for protection against the devil.
We should end our prayers again by honoring Him
Lastly, don't forget to listen. Yes, God can speak to you. Take time to be still, with an open heart.
We can pray to God anytime, anywhere. We pray in faith, that God WILL answer our prayers. We don’t need to use big words or repetitive words. We just need to talk to Him, open our heart, and show Him love and honor.

What Should We Pray About:
The Bible says we need to pray all the time, without stopping. How do we do that? Do we join a monastery and pray all day? No. Prayer is a state of mind. It like an open dialogue box with God. Start the day with thanking Him for protection and a good night sleep. Ask Him to be with you through the day, talk to Him about what is going to happen etc. Then throughout the day, thank Him for things when they are good, ask Him for help as needed, praise Him for little miracles, pray for the EMTs going to an accident and the people involved. Pray for wisdom. When you see your friend ask how their life is going, and pray for needs right then and there. The Bible also says we should be persistent. End the day again with thankfulness, praise, and ask God to help you with anything that is weighing on your mind. Mary C Crowley said, “every evening I turn my worries over to God. He's going to be up all night anyway.” You may not see your prayer answered right away. You may never see some prayers answered. Regardless, keep praying. Never give up hope. God does not need prayer to help us, so why pray? Prayer is communication. It is a relationship between you and God. As you pray, you start to change. Your eyes get opened to the needs of others. You get to find more about God and His character and His heart. You learn about yourself.

The Power of Prayer
Lately, many belittle the power of prayer. When a Christian says they are praying for you, and truly mean it, it can be the most important and powerful thing in the whole world. Yes, we don’t want to throw out those words insincerely without ever really meaning to care with intentions of never going to pray anyway. Yet, if we really do mean what we say and are going to lift someone up in prayer, we are asking the God of the universe, the creator or you and me, and the entire cosmos to intervene in our lives. The Bible says with God, all things are possible. We may not be with our kid at college, but God can be. We may not have the cure to our parent’s cancer, but God does. We may not have the answers to a failing marriage, but God can change hearts, and mend broken relationships. God can find the lost, heal the sick, save a lost soul, fulfill needs, give wisdom, forgive sins, teach us, guide us, and protect us. You may say, God hasn’t answered any of your prayers, or perhaps you are mad at God. You don’t understand what He is doing. One piece of advice my grandfather gave to my mom during a very difficult time in her life was to, “NEVER STOP PRAYER.” If you are angry, talk to Him. Sad…talk to Him. Too tired and worn out…keep talking. The Bible states that the Holy Spirit will talk on our behalf when we so upset we don’t even know what to say. The devil doesn’t want you to pray. He wants you to give up. The problem is, you are no match for the devil on your own. But, when you and God are working together, the devil is no match for God. “When God is on your side, who can be against you?” Check out the movie, “War Room.” It will be a great encouragement for you. Lastly, don't forget to LISTEN. Take time to sit and wait for the Lord. Yes, He will speak to you at times.

Barriers to Prayer
Okay to be real, there are some things that can get in the way of God hearing your prayers. So, it is good to evaluate yourself and make sure you don’t have any roadblocks hindering your prayers.
Unconfessed sin… Psalm 66:18
Lack of faith… James 1:5-7
Out of God’s will… 1 John 5:14-15
Selfish Motives… James 4:3
Hate in our heart to someone else… Mark 11;25
Husbands treating their wives unfairly… 1 Peter 3:7
We are not children of God… Proverbs 15:29 God can hear all prayers, but if you don’t want God in your life, there is no guarantee He will answer your prayer
